Reading The Star, July 9, I am amazed Sheffield Council now appears to be sponsoring John Lewis, a multi-pound business, with lower rent and a refurbished trading space.

I’m surprised we are not offering council cleaners.

Big business cannot be funded by Sheffield taxpayers.

Why Sheffield's John Lewis deal is 'nonsense' , says this letter writer. Why Sheffield's John Lewis deal is 'nonsense' , says this letter writer.

Have they given the council a percentage of profits over the years?

It’s madness.

Next, Atkinsons and the rest will want a helping hand.

It’s no good propping up a lost cause, it’s either successful or not.

We prop up lots of other things in Sheffield, like swimming pools, arenas etc.

However, I think shops are a no-no.

If not, let’s pay for everything out of the empty pot. It’s nonsense and doesn’t add up.
