Here's a good pub quiz question; how many Prime Ministers have visited Stocksbridge?

Well we have just been honoured by the presence of Mr Johnson so that's one, but my research suggests, (and please put me right on this if you know about others), the other was Harold Wilson in the sixties when he opened Stocksbridge College where the Coop is now.

So 50 or so years ago the Prime Minister came to celebrate the foundation of a of thriving further education college which was to help generations of young people set out in life, providing vocational courses, apprenticeships, A levels and beyond.

Little did those present on that historic day know the next Prime Minister's visit would be not to open public services, but a secret dash to a car park and shops as the leader of a government that had destroyed much of further education, along with violent cuts to other public services, in a campaign for an election he cannot be trusted to actually hold which is all about a project which far from providing for the future education of the young people of Stocksbridge will, according the government's own calculation further impoverish all our public services.

If anybody there at Harold Wilson's visit reads this perhaps they would like to tell us about the event and give their views on where we have gone in the last 50 years.
