Letter - Stop the illegal parking, bring the kids at the correct time, drop them off and drive away

It is beyond me why people are arriving at school in the mornings over forty minutes before the kids go in, just because they want the best parking spot near the main gate, despite no parking yellow lines and signs.

There are people queuing at the gate in the morning, many with no masks but stood barely a foot from each other and in many cases chatting.

There are the ‘leaners’, the ones that get out of their cars, wander off to lean on the vehicles of other people they know, for a chat. This not only causes parking problems but potentially risking Covid, when none of them seem to have masks.

Once the gates open there’s someone managing the gate without a mask, chatting with the adults without a mask, and letting the adults in willy nilly. Adults are bringing in toddlers and babies and mixing and chatting with school staff who aren’t wearing masks either.

Yesterday I watched over 20 adults stroll out of the school yard and not one with a mask. Some then stand chatting for up to half an hour. It’s a problem for residents who can’t get in or out of their driveways, the road gets choked and the busses get stuck.

Same in the afternoon. By 3pm the first lot of kids were due out and the queue was over 50 people, some with prams and pushchairs. All were allowed into the school yard and I saw just five people with masks.

What about people who live near the schools who are being put at risk by people who aren’t doing as they’ve been told? Stop the illegal parking, bring the kids at the correct time, and drop them off and drive away.

A slight change this morning as they began arriving before 8.30 am, which is probably because they are staggering arrival times. The times were so close that when the first lot of parents went into the school yard, they were still there, and then coming out of the gates, but the next batch of parents had already arrived and were milling around. There are parents going into the school yards with tiny babies in prams, which seems pretty silly to me.
