Jack Charlton was a 'wonderful' man - a reader letter

I went for an interview at Sheffield Wednesday football ground in 1978 straight after leaving school.

I was only 16 and slightly nervous as I walked into the SWFC building.

I sat outside the office wondering what my first interview would be like.

As I looked around I was aware of a tall man walking towards me.

As he got closer, I realised it was Jack Charlton.

He came over to me and said: “Are you being looked after all right?”

“Yes, thank you” I replied.

“Good,” he said and with that he walked off.

Wow, I thought, I’ve just met Jack Charlton.

I couldn’t wait to go home and tell my mum and dad and brother.

I went in for my interview, but could hardly concentrate.

What a wonderful man Jack Charlton was, seeing a nervous young girl sat there and making sure I was all right.
