My wife and I would like to pay tribute to all the staff at Seven Hills dementia nursing home, Cherry Tree Road, Nether Edge.

We had come to recognise over this last year, since my mother-in-law was transferred to Seven Hills from her previous home in Essex, an atmosphere of genuine and compassionate care displayed by all the staff at Seven Hills.

The last week, as we sat at the bedside of my mother-in-law, Vi Bassett, as she succumbed to Covid-19, we gained an even greater and up-close experience of this care.

The dignity, love, and commitment shown to Vi in life and in death, was from the heart and universal across all the staff.

Quite rightly, we highly esteem great icons and figures of compassion and care such as Florence Nightingale and Mother Teresa.

As we made our final and sad goodbyes to Vi on Wednesday, June 17, as she passed away peacefully, there was much to be thankful for too.

The love for family and friends and the vitality for living Vi had demonstrated in her life, and recognition that in these unprecedented and challenging times Sheffield does indeed have its own icons and figures of great compassion daily doing what I suspect they would simply say was their job.

With heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Seven Hills from Peter and Sharon Allen.

The Reverend Peter Allen
