LETTERS: Most residents don’t mind tree felling - I don’t get the fuss

For many months I have read the articles and letters in the Star regarding Sheffield’s roadside trees and feel it is time to put in my twopence worth.

Firstly, I believe it is a fact that all felled trees are replaced with species that are more suitable for the roadside verges and less likely to lift the pavement.

The Shiregreen estate was the first in Sheffield to have pavements resurfaced and within a year the roots of the mature trees had cracked and lifted the newly laid asphalt.

Amey are often seen on the estate patching these areas which puts a strain on an already stretched budget.

I am sure that if the residents of the estate were asked, the majority would be in favour of removing all the mature woodland trees and replacing them with more suitable smaller varieties.

Another issue is that when the pavement is cracked and lifted by the tree roots it becomes a trip hazard, and may even leave the council open to compensation claims.

I am proud of our city’s green credentials, but cannot understand all the fuss about felling trees which will be replaced anyway.
