Letter: The Premier League is a frightening place to be for all but the few

I have been watching football for over 65 years. As a young lad on the kop at Hillsborough I loved every minute of every game, even when we lost. I became a season ticket holder in 1967 and remain one to this day.

However, as the years go by I get more and more disheartened with the game. Football was once the working mans game, not any more. It is now controlled by greed and dishonesty. Sky television seem to control the game. The Premier League is full of players diving, players feigning injury, and players begging referees to have opponents booked or sent off, etc etc. Loyalty no longer exists in both players and managers. The main cause of this is obviously money orientated. Transfer fees and wages are so absurd today they are practically obscene.

Just today I read that Man Utd and Juventus are considering a swap deal involving Romelu Lukaku and Paulo Dybela. Both players are valued at 80 Million pounds. What? how can anyone be worth a fraction of that. Even run of the mill players from lower divisions are commanding 20 Million pounds. It beggars belief. Then I read that a proposed deal to take Gareth Bale from Real Madrid to a Chinese club had fallen through. Had it have happened, Bale was reported to being offered One Million pounds a week in wages. How can that be right? How can anyone spend that amount of money? Then look at the other end of the scale. Poor old Bury could go out of business in the next few days. Bolton have just escaped by the skin of their teeth. Both these clubs will start next season on minus twelve point as a result of administration. I really feel for the supporters of these clubs. Quite a few other clubs are on the brink just for the sake of a tax bill of a few grand. This can't be right can it? If Gareth bale had gone to China and got his one Million a week he could have stepped in and said he you are Bury or whoever, here's a weeks wages to help you out. Alas I think not. How long will it be before the first 100 Million pound transfer?

I can remember the first one million pound transfer and people said it was outrageous. So a new season beckons. A couple of new rule changes plus VAR to contend with, (why do they bother with all this), I shall still be going to Hillsborough for as long as I can. I would love Wednesday to win the Championship but stay where they are and not go up. The Premier League is a frightening place to be for all but the few.
