Letter: Thank you for the positive journalism
and live on Freeview channel 276
I am a nurse working in Sheffield and have been sick and tired of hearing nothing but sensationalist journalism.
So much so, that I began to question why journalists seem incapable of giving a balanced view of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Always it is negative and sensationalised to the point of it being sickening and people are actually switching off. However, it was refreshing to see you had printed several positive reports in The Star on April 17.One such tweet from a daughter whose mum is a nurse. She praised Sheffield hospitals for being organised and having plenty of PPE. I second this. Then I read the article by Robert Cumber, again positive with a doctor praising the hospitals in the same way. Then Steve Jones did a wonderful positive story on a care home in Sheffield that was successfully caring for patients and managing Covid 19 skillfully. They too had enough PPE.Sadly this article, despite being uplifting, was overshadowed by a letter from Arthur Baker who was critical of social care including care homes.
His suggestion was that the media continue to report inadequacies within the system.Reading this letter typified to me how much emphasis there is on negativity. There was nothing positive in that letter.
Mr Baker clearly wrote from experience, but we really don't need the media to play Big Brother.
That's what management gets paid for and believe me there are plenty of NHS and social care disciplines visiting the care homes regularly who will report any concerns as they are legally obliged to do so, so no, care homes and social care do not need the sensationalist media stories, most of which are one-sided anyway. And finally there was a letter from Ernest Hooker which was refreshing.
He asked what kind of a world do we live in. I agree wholeheartedly with him.
I ask similarly why politicians and others of opposing parties are so bitter and angry that instead of being useful in the Covid-19 pandemic they can only spout benign and cruel comments to try to point score.
