Letter: Check facts before putting pen to paper

I respectfully suggest having read B Gannon's Star, November 12, letter "Not just about Brexit", that the writer check on their facts before putting pen to paper. He/she makes a number of unsubstantiated statements which are very questionable and worthy of challenge.

As their letter is not just about Brexit, in what way does Boris Johnson deserve to be classed as an arrogant conman? He has repeatedly said in Parliament that the NHS remains within the UK and will not be given away to Donald Trump. What war will he be taking us into, one concerning subsequent non-existent weapons of mass destruction, as Tony Blair declared when attempting to justify our going to war with Iraq?

I have repeatedly written that I have supported Labour for over 60 years but will not do so while Jeremy Corbyn remains as Leader. The only reason for my supporting UKIP and then Brexit when Nigel Farage founded the Party is that their intention is to take us out of the EU - an aim which Boris Johnson has now pledged to do - hence my support for him. Once out of the EU (not Europe) I suggest that many Brexit voters will return to their original parties.

My letter was certainly not a character assassination of Jeremy Corbyn. I have never questioned the man's personal principles only his political ones or perceived lack of them. He was called back into the Parliament chamber to clarify an allegation of muttering that Mrs May was a "stupid woman". Televised recording clearly showed to the public and fellow MPs that he used those words yet he claimed to have said "stupid people" To lip read "people" for "woman" strains credulity.

B Gannon saves the best perceived 'faux pas until last when stating that Jeremy Corbyn sees both sides in Ireland and in Palestine and will stay in NATO with our friends in Europe. The man is a self- acknowledged sympathiser with the IRA cause and shows much more support for Palestine than Israel. He presides over a party which is rife with accusations of anti-semitic behaviour among its members. As for being pro staying in NATO with our friends in Europe, I would remind the writer that in a 2011 speech Mr Corbyn was quoted as saying "NATO is a major problem and threat to the world" as he derided the 28 member military alliance. In 2014 he was condemned for claiming that NATO was set up to promote a Cold War with the Soviet Union. These remarks were condemned by the then Security Minister who said that "Mr Corbyn was "off his trolley."

In conclusion B Gannon fails to mention the major part that America plays in the NATO Alliance with the EU. I suggest that the sole reason that since 1945 wars have not broken out between Russia, Europe and the USA is the possession of a nuclear deterrent. To highlight America's contribution, in early 2019 a total inventory of nuclear weapons was 13865 of which more than 90% were owned by Russia and the US. Of the 28 EU states only two are classed as Nuclear Weapon states under the 1970 Treaty of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, The UK and France. With Jeremy Corbyn's track record of pro-unilateral disarmament, opposition to NATO and hate of the USA, thank heavens we can rely on a US led NATO, rather than him to keep the peace in Europe!
