Kids cause havoc on the tram

A WHILE ago, there were several letters in The Star regarding the Birley tram and the schoolchildren who caught it. I composed a letter about their behaviour and then had second thoughts and tore it up, give them another chance I decided. Well, they have had another chance, and failed, so here goes.

For nearly a year now, I have caught both the morning and afternoon tram which takes the children to and from school, so I speak out of quite a lengthy experience. Generally speaking, their behaviour is absolutely appalling; the homeward-bound journey being the worst. I would say that about 35 per cent are OK, the rest are a nightmare. The language is awful, they are rowdy, they throw missiles out of the tram windows and they have no respect whatsoever either for passengers, their friends or indeed, themselves. They appear to have forgotten any manners they have ever been taught, if indeed they were ever taught any in the first place. An elderly couple travelling on the tram the other day made the comment "they are a law unto themselves" and that is it in a nutshell.

I am a pretty tolerant person but, I have had occasion to speak (politely) regarding certain situations and, believe me, they couldn't care less.

I just find the whole ting very disturbing, high jinks are one thing but, this is more than that, there is a boorishness about them and a total disregard for anything or anyone.

If you want a second opinion, I suggest you ask any conductor working this route.

Parents, wake up! You are probably reading this and thinking that it cannot possibly apply to your son or daughter, but these children belong to someone. Maybe it's you?
