“Just get it rolled out so people can start living again”; Star Readers react to vaccine rollout

The Oxford/Astrazeneca vaccine started its rollout recently (January 4) and is now ramping up across the country, and we asked The Star readers what they thought, and this is what they had to say:

Jean Hepplestone said; “I wish they would throw everything at it and crack on. A fortune was spent on the Nightingale hospitals which aren’t fit for purpose due to staffing. The only way out of this horror is a vaccination programme.”

Glynis Leary is firmly on board, saying that; “I have already had the first jab available with no side effects. Anything we can do to be rid of this killer has to be good. Bring it on I say.”

Maureen Howard is feeling uneasy right now, and said; “I for one will feel a lot happier when I have had my vaccine. Trying to lead a restricted life as much as possible is worth it if we can get back to some sort of normality this year.”

Barry Chilton believes in the potential of the vaccine, saying; “It’s the only way out. I’ve had Covid and still have antibodies 10 months later but will still be having it when my turn comes. I want normal life back.”

Philip Gascoyne is adamant and he wants it; “ASAP! But wish they weren't going against the manufacturer's advice and only giving 1 dose. Not designed for this!”

And, even though there’s a bit of a wait between the doses, Suzanne Irish-Deverill is looking to the positives, saying; “The Oxford vaccine drug trial doses were given three months apart so I don’t have any issue with the delay (if it turns out I still need to have one)”.

Richard Cherry just wants us to show some faith, saying; “Bring it on let’s beat the virus let’s show the world how proud we are of the scientists and all the people who helped produce this vaccine. Support the NHS who has help this country so much delivering a world class healthcare system. This world needs to start moving again.”

Chris James isn’t fully sold and he does think that; “the government missed a trick when they gave the manufacturers indemnity (although I know why they did, and do) - if they'd of said there's a £million for anyone's family if someone dies or has a life changing injury as a result, I'm sure more of the doubters would be onboard. That being said, this vaccine can surely only be a good thing for all the people who need it, and as a result everyone else too.”

Kath Wilson has no such qualms, saying; “Can't have it soon enough but happy to wait my turn obviously. When something's the answer to ending the worst times ever you refuse it at your peril. From day 1 it was only ever going to be the 'geeks' that would save us, the effort & resources thrown at this is extraordinary.” — all hail the ‘geeks’ Kath.

Emma Louise meanwhile is not really on board, and still has questions, saying; “I respect anyone’s decision to have it. Just wish other people would respect my decision not to have it!”, and Julie Burrell is firmly in the ‘nope’ camp, saying; “same way I feel about the pfizer one. Not happening” and Paul Ferguson still remains unsure, saying; “good luck to all that as it but not all of us feel the same about we dont know anything about and what it will do to you”. However, Ellen Fieldsend doesn’t agree with the naysayers, when she said; “They wouldn't be vaccinating millions of people if it wasn't safe to do so”.

Ash Alexander hasn’t quite got his tin foil hat on when replying; “I think that it's going to be used to track us. Scary stuff. Sent from my iPhone” — amusing and he also does weddings and bar mitzvahs, socially distanced, of course.

One of the many waiting for their turn is Ben Johnson, who said; “I can't wait to have it. I want to go back to work, I want my wedding to go ahead, and I want to be able to go on my honeymoon. I also want my family and friends to be safe.”

Linda Evans is delighted by news of the rollout beginning, saying; “Fantastic, it’s either Covid or the Vaccine. I’m putting my trust in our brilliant scientists they are trying to help us.”

Another person who wants to get on with life is Sarah Louise Wain, who says; “Just get it bloody rolled out so people can start living again and other illness can start and be treated again correctly and the economy can start to repair if this goes on anyone it's going to be Impossible to live and people will be dying of quite illnesses that could be treated.”

Meanwhile Simon Heathcote is firmly in the ‘Yes’ camp here, saying; “I have never had a flu vaccine but this is different. If this will get life back to normal let's get it done. It's a no brainer really.”

And, Linda Christian says; “How many have tablets and other injections from doctors without asking questions it’s only same” — well, you certainly have a point there, Linda.

Finally, Christopher Dixon isn’t just thinking of himself when he says; “Get it done ASAP and we can crack on. Also if school are so unsafe why aren't teachers first for this vaccine” — you have a point there Christopher, and thankfully the government has now moved priority of teachers much higher up the scale as part of the roll out.
