Inaccurate on Sheffield Blitz

You have shown photographs of the devastation of the shops on High Street with a date of December 12, this would have been taken that morning.

The air raid siren sounded at about 7.30pm on December 11, and the all-clear sounded about midnight.

I remember this because my mother was making some breadcakes, and during the air raid my father had to keep running into the house to take the bread out of the oven and to put more in.

We lived on the Wybourn Estate and when we came out of the air raid shelter and looked over Hyde Park we could see the inferno that was the city centre in ruins.

The Star would respectfully disagree with Mr Hardy about the date of the Sheffield Blitz. All historical documents and accounts we have seen agree on the date of December 12.

The first reports in the Sheffield Telegraph and Independent on Friday, December 13, 1940, said: “In Berlin early this morning, informed German sources stated that large bombing units last night delivered an attack on Sheffield.”
