The Star letters pages have been going strong for decades.

They are the ultimate reflection of Sheffield’s quirky opinions, sense of humour and strong – oh, so strong – opinions.

They are an important part of the newspaper and one of the most popular.

You challenge our thinking and you make points that city leaders who rather not hear.

Throughout lockdown, it has been heartwarming to see the support our letters writers have shown for each other during tough times.

There aren’t many local papers which still maintain two pages of letters a day but it is a tradition which everyone who works at The Star is incredibly proud to support.

I appreciate that it isn’t always easy to think of new topics and lockdown has left many of us searching for inspiration – so I’m very pleased that we’ve teamed up with Jack’s Supermarket in Sheffield to help you along.

We will be picking a winning letter each month and the writer will win a £40 shopping voucher.

Our discerning judges are looking for letters that make us laugh, hit a nerve for everyone in the city or sum up how we all feel.

They can be on any topic, of any length and every letter which appears on these pages will be automatically entered into the competition, no matter if you write just one a month or several (you know who you are).

So get putting pen to paper or fingers to keypad please .

The game is afoot, as one esteemed writer might say.

As you probably know, at Jack’s we’re passionate about bringing the flavours of Britain to you, our customers, at the lowest possible prices. That’s why we proudly work with hundreds of British farmers, growers and producers.

The other thing that’s really important to us is our community and we like to help out where we can. That’s why since opening, we have supported a number of local schools, hospitals, care homes, and charities, as well as FairShare, a charity which ensures that everyone can put food on the table. We also run our Jack’s Supports scheme, where we giveaway a minimum of £1,500 every three months to local good causes in Sheffield. Since the launch of the initiative, we’ve been delighted to support local charities, sports clubs, community centres, places of worship and social clubs.

We hope by sponsoring the ‘letter of the month’ competition that we’ll hear more about what’s going on locally, and it’ll enable us to get involved even more.

We are so proud of everything we have done so far for the Sheffield community, and will continue to do so in the years to come. The launch of this competition is just another opportunity for us to give back to those who have been so supportive of our store since it opened its doors back in 2019.

We hope to see you all in store soon.
