"Harry and Meghan have let off a great big stink bomb"

So, Harry and Meghan have let off a great big stink bomb, and as the almighty pong extends from Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and right up to Balmoral, Meghan has hot-footed it back to Canada.

Can I blame them for wanting to break free from the large royal aquarium, at the mercy and in full view of the public and the swarming media? No!

However, they could at least have done the Queen the courtesy of informing her of their intentions first, likewise Charles who had actually, to be fair, given Meghan away at the wedding, indicating his acceptance of her.

Much as I believe in female assertion and supporting the sisterhood, I can’t help wondering if Harry became infatuated by a woman who has been playing him like a fiddle and if this decision has been largely instigated by her.

After all, for all his rebellions and high jinks in his younger years, he never previously showed any deep dissatisfaction with his role, despite clearly distrusting the media who he saw as being instrumental in his mother’s death.

Reflecting back on their televised engagement interview, when there should have been equal input from them both, Meghan seemed to do all the talking and appeared to be the dominant partner.

So, now they intend to have a foot in both the royal and ‘un-royal’ camps, making themselves in for a giant bi-Atlantic ham (ie Harry and Megan), sandwich, with one slice of bread in Canada and the other in England.

Well, good luck with that one.

The logistics look insurmountable to me.

I can’t see it being sustainable.

Let it not be said that they should have the decency to vacate the house that taxpayers paid to renovate, and nor should they expect taxpayers to fund their security.

They will still require it, after all.

At best they can only ever live in relative anonymity.

However, I’m sure they’ll never have to resort to delivering pizzas or lap dancing to self-fund this necessity.

I just hope that Harry, the one with the most to lose and the highest price to pay, hasn’t cut off his nose to spite his own face.

His late mother would have understood his bid for freedom, but not to the detriment of his relationship with his brother, in particular.

If I’m wrong about the imbalance in their relationship and they’re both in equal agreement about their decision, then they may have potentially done the right thing if by some miracle a workable arrangement can be made to suit them all.

However, they’ve gone about it in the wrong way and may have alienated themselves from both the royals and the public permanently.

Would they consider that to have been worth it?

Time will tell.
