FROM THE EDITOR: 'If we have to stay put at least we have plenty to rediscover'

I have absolutely no intention of leaving this country in 2020. I am staying put, venturing no further than our neighbouring counties and enjoying every minute.
There are lots of places to rediscover in Sheffield including the Millowners Arms at Kelham Island Museum. There are lots of places to rediscover in Sheffield including the Millowners Arms at Kelham Island Museum.

I didn’t have any holidays abroad booked, which turned out to be lucky considering what so many others have gone through as they waited to hear if trips would be on or off, refunded or thousands of pounds just disappeared.

I have lots of friends who have risked heading overseas because of their deep desire for consistent sun and beaches with seas that are warm enough to dip more than a toe in. One of the great things about being human is that we are all different and I don’t envy their holidays or the foreign shores they visit. Even the photos of the prime minister’s rural hideaway – well, almost – didn’t make me want to rush up north, although I have always adored Scotland. What I have decided to do this year is rediscover the many parts of South Yorkshire which I never seem to have time to enjoy - and find a few new ones along the way.

On Saturday we followed in the footsteps of Robin Hood and went for an adventure in Loxley. The scenery is so incredible you have to take time to just sit and admire it, rather like you do when visiting sights on other continents. The customer service in shops and bars was exceptional, that great Sheffield welcome has not been diminished by lockdown. The local produce was worth taking home for friends to sample and the ale was definitely a winner. All in all, we had a day worth writing home about.

On Sunday we decided not to travel quite so far. Kelham Island was the place for us. This highly-recommended winner of multiple national awards did not disappoint. Around every corner is an independent bar, cafe or restaurant offering high quality treats with all the necessary safety measures thrown in. The sun was shining, the tables were full of friends enjoying themselves while socially distancing and taking their responsibililty to help the local economy very seriously. The heritage is an international marvel and you discover more with every step. Incredible!

As with all trip, the photos don’t quite do it justice but I will thoroughly recommend both our weekend destinations to eveybody. Why don't you give them a go yourself? Don’t forget to send a postcard ...
