There is a spring in our step and we are looking forward to enjoying ourselves together like never before.

As Sheffield emerges from what has been the most challenging 12 months most of us can remember, your Star has decided it is time to seize hold of the happiness – to spread it far and wide.

We have championed this city for almost 140 years but now we want to do more and we have big plans.

Your Star will be 16 pages bigger on Saturday - and every weekend after that – so we can bring you a brand new supplement. We’ve called it The Sheffield Weekend, which might not be the most imaginative title but we promise it will do what it says on the cover.

It will be crammed full of things to do, places to go, events to join and special, uniquely Steel City things to raise your spirits. There will be suggestions for things to eat and, of course, the odd tipple or two.

We have thrown our weight firmly behind our independent businesses and will share even more of their success stories … inviting you to secure their future by giving them your well-earned business.

I believe that bright times ahead for our city centre depends on these innovative firms and will be banging their drum loudly.

We want town, as everyone who lives in the country's fourth biggest city calls it so lovingly, to turn a corner to more positive times. We are already seeing signs of that but it will only happen if you, and we, make it so. We also want our neighbourhoods to bustle with life. To help with that we will be shining a spotlight on the many wonderful things that are already taking place while demanding more … well, you wouldn't want us to not push Sheffield forward would you?

Your Weekend supplement will also be full of interviews and columns with true Sheffielders. We want to make you laugh, smile and feel proud of your home city. We also want to keep you busy so we have moved the puzzles supplement which would normally have appeared into today’s paper, into Saturday’s edition. Of course, we will be keeping everybody’s favourite Retro supplement in Saturday’s Star but it will have a new, improved look. You, are ever supportive readers, are never backward in coming forward so get in touch … when Saturday comes!
