EDITOR'S COMMENT: Keeping safe, thinking positive and being kind are the only aims we all need right now

What fantastic news that Sheffield is receiving more money to encourage women to do sport.

It is an area that is so poorly funded some of the best clubs in the country sit on the verge of closure every season.

In so many ways, society still tells girls that they aren’t as good at sport as boys.

It infiltrates their minds at such a young age that the lack of confidence can last a lifetime.

Good luck trying to persuade a teenage girl that she can play football for the first time.

Equally, you’ll struggle to get a middle-aged mum to try her hand at netball without feeling embarrassed.

We are incredibly blessed with some awe inspiring female athletes in this city but funding is necessary to allow them to reach more. All power to them.

As the motto states, This Girl Can … but that thought led me in a different direction this week.

As we work from home, balancing fitness, pay cuts, the stresses of a pandemic, teaching our children without schools and keeping the family sane, we can – but perhaps we shouldn’t?

I’m not suggesting for a minute that we don’t look after our own fitness or do what we can to keep up with sports and activities that we love.

For some, that will help stop us going stir-crazy.

I’m just reminding you that we don’t have to do it all and, now more than ever, it is fine to drop the odd ball here and there. In fact, it is probably healthy.

I am certainly not going to emerge from this any fitter, having written a best seller, learnt a new hobby or with a sparkly clean house.

Much as I love the idea, I also know that if my family and my team at work get through this in one piece then we have utterly won.

Keeping safe and trying really hard to think positive, be happy and be kind is the only aim we all need right now.

So while we can, we just might not right now. That is absolutely fine … and we all need to support each other in that.
