Editor's comment: Here's to a health and happier new year

And with that, the year that called itself 2020 was over. It wasn’t much of a friend to most people and yesterday’s announcements were the perfectly depressing wrap-up we have come to expect.

It is good that Sheffield has remained in tier three. It gives us a chance to take individual responsibility because we all know that is what makes the biggest difference. It isn’t an opportunity to let our guard slip, quite the opposite. This is a chance to be sensible and do what we can to stop the spread. After all the days are short, the weather is very cold and you are much better off in your own cosy home than out there.

The days between Christmas and New Year are usual challengingly quiet for journalists. Not this year but then everything has been different since March. However, we are very determined to keep raising spirits so while you are finishing off the festive cheeses, I do hope you enjoy our Whitworth special. The whole idea came from a reader and it was such a great suggestion, we couldn’t resist. We all need as many laughs as possible while we make it through the final hours of 2020.

I love the fact that cartoonists can get away with things that journalists never could and nobody understands Sheffielders’ sense of humour like Whitworth, or indeed his father before him.

What memories has it prompted for you from 2020? Go on, share your best moments with us all. Maybe you have had the vaccine or at least have a date in your diary? Or was there something pre-pandemic which still makes you smile?

Do get in touch with your thoughts and tell us which is your favourite cartoon. I have been very pleased to be getting more handwritten post than usual in recent weeks so why not put to paper and join the regulars on our ever popular letters pages?

I also enjoy catching up with you, our lovely Star readers, over the phone. Stanley Wraith and his wife Maureen called with their own suggestion this week.

At 86, Mr Wraith, who lives in Heeley, thinks we should all be wishing each other a healthy new year.

I sincerely hope we are each a lot happier in 2021 but, yes Mr Wraith, more than anything I wish you all good health.
