Editor: Holiday to lift spirits, raise pride and not break the bank

I spent a week of annual leave in the most glorious location on earth last week and spent less in five days than I have on previous trips, just getting to and from the airport.

The weather was beautiful although that was rather lucky, the attractions were a delight and the people… well, you wouldn’t meet nicer folk no matter where you travelled.

I even spent some time on a cruise and, while it might not have been exactly luxury, it certainly opened my eyes to new haunts.

Yes, you guessed it. I enjoyed a staycation right here in Sheffield

I understand that everybody is different but I don’t really fancy travelling abroad this year, all considering, even though I’ve had both my vaccines. So instead of trying to fathom the unfathomable traffic light system, I decided to stay right here and it was without doubt the right decision.

There are so many places to visit in the Steel City which are completely free. Top of the list had to be Kelham Island Museum. I have been there many, many times myself but my youngest son hadn’t and he loved it.

I challenge anybody to feel the roar of the world's biggest steam engine and not feel tingles down their spine. It just never gets old and it says so much – very noisily – about the city we are and what we could still become.

At the other extreme we took the very calming heritage cruise from Victoria Quays towards Attercliffe. I learnt a lot and loved a lot of the things we passed along the way. It did make me think our city should do more to promote and share stories of this fantastic stretch – beyond that infamous Full Monty scene, of course. We couldn’t really spot much difference between basking in high temperatures drinking a G&T at Victoria Quays or on the Costa Del Sol, except the service is obviously always better in Yorkshire. We sat in the sun eating ice cream and numerous treats, made right here.

Basically, if it was Sheffield… we did it. But we didn’t have enough time to do everything and I am already planning my next vacation in exactly the same spot.

There is so much more to do and places to enjoy. I have to admit, the housekeeping left a lot to be desired but the bed was just as comfy as at home.
