'They don’t like it up ’em' - Letter from a reader

Jones is a good person, brave, loyal and kind-hearted, and it’s hard to imagine him resorting to the petty bigotry, chippy accusations of bias and childish name-calling that we read in too many letters in The Star.

The nearest he comes to this is his constant assertion that Mr Yeatman, the officious verger, is ‘a troublemaker’, but then that’s exactly what he is.

Yeatman’s conviction that every little infraction of his self-made rules is a personal slight should ring a bell with some of our more conspiracist-minded correspondents.

As for ‘they don’t like it up ’em’, the show’s writers, Jimmy Perry and David Croft, took this from a sergeant that one of them heartily despised, considering the phrase the height of stupidity.
