The Lighter Side of Life with Kate Mason: Stop the twitter spats and talk to each other

When a relationship comes to an end, it is important to treasure the good times, learn from your mistakes and deal with the aftermath in a mature manner.

Sounds too good to be true? I’ll admit it rarely pans out like that here in the real world. I’m all for getting things off your chest but washing your dirty linen in public is becoming the norm rather than the exception.

It used to be that you’d get together with your mates to slag off the ex but these days people want the whole world to know.

Take Zayn Malik, the former One Direction turned solo star, who dumped his fiancée, Little Mix star Perrie Edwards, via text message.

Zayn had remained tightlipped on the subject but decided to speak out on the subject in a very underhand manner.

Instead of speaking to the woman he was set to walk down the aisle with in person about his obvious issue with her, he decided to take aim on Twitter.

Zayn retweeted a post asking social media users to retweet if they liked Fifth Harmony’s song Worth It or favourite the message if they preferred Little Mix’s song Black Magic. The cynic in me says the tweet coincides quite nicely with the launch of his new solo career. After all no publicity is bad publicity.

But the stunt is more than just a little immature, this is passive aggressive behaviour at its worst.

And not content with throwing shade on his ex just a day later Malik was taking on Calvin Harris in a war of words over Taylor Swift and her decision to pull her music from a free streaming site.

The spat ended with Zayn slagging him over wearing dentures.

It really annoys me when people turn into keyboard warriors and start mouthing off with things that they wouldn’t dare say in person.

Why do people assume the protection of a computer screen means they can say anything they want?

Whilst celebrity spats may be mildly entertaining it seems everyone is at it these days. I’m sick and tired of reading statuses on Facebook with people making threats and going into the ‘he said, she said’ debate.

I wish people would pluck up the courage to have it out in person instead of embarrass themselves by splashing it all over the internet. If you wouldn’t say it in person – don’t say it on social, it’s the coward’s way out.
