As the numbers of rough sleepers increases, it is easy to point the finger of blame and moan about a lack of action.

The criticism is fair. Sheffield, like every city in this country, has a problem and we can all see that it is getting worse.

But there is a serious danger of tarring everyone with the same brush. There is some incredible work being done by individuals and charities, which is really making a difference to lives.

Today you'll have read our feature on St Wilfrid's Centre.

It is quite a landmark building but what goes on inside those walls is more than you could imagine. Putting a roof over somebody's head is not all that's needed.

This charity offers a massive support network to get people back into the kind of lives we all deserve. Simple things that most of us take for granted - cooking skills, reading, writing, jobs, friendships and somebody to talk to - are essential to really turning lives around.

St Wilfrid's isn't the only charity working on homelessness in Sheffield. We regularly write about all of them in The Star because supporting them is the best thing you can do to help people off the streets.

Right now, you can also help by making a donation and sponsoring The Star team - myself, head of football Chris Holt and Sheffield United writer Danny Hall - who are participating in the Sleep Out at Bramall Lane on March 13. Every penny helps. With your support, this event could raise £25,000 - the salary of one welfare worker.

You can sponsor us at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/starstwilfssleepout or post cheques - payable to St Wilfrid's Centre - to Nancy Fielder, Editor, The Star, The Balance, 2 Pinfold Street, Sheffield, S1 2GU

Even better, sign up at www.stwilfridscentre.org - then wrap up and join us overnight.

Thank you so much to everyone who has already donated. We will keep working with the city's charities to do all we can - together - to support people into safe accommodation and off our streets.
