Shaun Says: Happy New Year to you all

Happy New Year to you all, the corks have been popped, the quality street is down to the coconut ones and the toffee pennies, the leftover turkey is long gone, and the mince pies are just a slightly nauseating memory.

We’re back in the gym, the swimming pool, back on our healthy eating plans, the gym is buzzing with the sound of the new members, like lost lambs, wide eyed and shivering, while the oiled up wolves stalk around flexing the one or two muscles they bother to work on, and complaining loudly about NOOOOOBS!

Hundreds of people have woken up this morning to the terrifying realisation that they are now ‘seeing someone’ after some well intentioned but sozzled fumbling at the Works Do, The Christmas Party, The Gooch Gathering or the New Years Carnage.

Others will be glad to see the back of the ex who once again made Christmas a living hell, and final straw broken, a new single future stretches out like a golden ribbon of yellow brick road.

Vows of temperance, sobriety, moderation and redemption have been made, many already broken, but some holding fast, some people are in it for the long haul, and I salute them.

I gave up on Resolutions a long time ago, why make idle promises once a year when change is an ongoing thing, it’s all too easy to cop out and renege on your promises, and if you really want to make a change you have to make that commitment every day.

Anyway, it’s been a good Christmas season, I watched all my statutory Christmas films, and two new ones, and also two films I haven’t watched in years, firstly I watched Lawrence of Arabia, an absolute epic, very much of its time, but still a fascinating watch, Peter O’Toole is imperious, the cast is star studded, and the story is a mixture of boys own adventure and political intrigue.

I also watched Subway, a Luc Besson film from the 80’s featuring a young Christophe Lambert, Isabelle Adjani, Jean Reno in a thriller set among the dark underbelly and tunnels of the Paris Metro, a story of power and control, bureaucracy, love, crime, survival and music. The soundtrack is incredible, and I’ve been listening to it non stop, highly recommended.

I’ve got plenty going on this month, comedy gigs, podcasts and radio shows, and on the 29th, The Big Shaun Experience Comedy Club returns to the Fat Cat. Headliner Mick Ferry, opener Sam Serrano and middle spots from Wendy King and Calum Scouller. Tickets are £12.50 plus booking fee from wegottickets.com
