Sensible behaviour now will reap rewards in the future, says Sheffield health boss

We are all getting a bit bewildered by conflicting optimism and gloom about the future direction of coronavirus and the effects on our ability to work, be educated and enjoy leisure time safely.

Schools are now coming back and that hopefully will dispel some of the negativity around, to enable children to associate with their peers and their parents return to a degree of normality.

Hopefully that will now allow them and their employers to discuss sensible back-to-workplace activity that inevitably will be on a more flexible basis than previously applied.

In rebuilding our lives, we also have to rebuild our businesses ravaged by coronavirus who will need time to recover and secure their futures.

The emphasis on local public health measures is most welcome and the increase in local testing centres should give us confidence with their accessibility.

We all have learnt a lot during the last traumatic few months and that will have reminded us of the responsibility for our own health and protecting those who are the most vulnerable in society.

Certainly, taking every opportunity to exercise more is a not only a sensible health improving activity, but will enhance our ability to prepare for the winter flu season – flu vaccines are now being promoted and I hope we all make informed decisions on having one.

Coronavirus has taught us to take care of ourselves, take precautionary measures, wear masks when advised and go for tests if having symptoms.

If we do that so it becomes a habit, we can have cautious optimism – winter always brings health challenges – that we can live again, return to work, enjoy leisure time and see our children meet their mates at school.

We do not have to be fearful, just sensible and we can come through the next few months wiser and more confident after the lockdown and enjoy a well-earned Christmas.

We can make the gloom many are peddling reality if we lose our self discipline that was displayed so well during the lockdown.

Our health is in our own hands, by co-operating with those front-line workers working so hard to advise and protect us.
