The question on everyone’s lips is vital for Sheffield city centre

If I had a pound for every time I am asked the same question about the centre of Sheffield, I would be a very rich woman.

It is a question that people want an answer to because it would help them immediately, but it is also a question that is borne out of concern from right across this wonderful city of ours. Why hasn’t John Lewis reopened its Sheffield branch?

I have been asked by phone, by email, by post and on more forms of social media that you can imagine. Oh, how I wish I had an answer for you all for so many reasons. Firstly there are the staff, sorry partners, many of whom are on furlough and worried about their own futures. Also there are the shoppers who don’t want to spend their money online, love the service and want to go shopping again. Then there is the bigger picture of a city that is finally turning the corner of development but still has this enormous rather shabby looking elephant in the room. What we want is to see John Lewis blossom as town improves but yet it clearly isn’t even a priority store for the chain to reopen after lockdown. Let’s not pretend, there are thousands of Sheffielders who are only tempted into the city centre because of John Lewis. Yes they go to other places while they are in town but would they bother if that particular department store – and its big car park – disappeared? I fear not, actually they tell me not which is why everyone is so concerned. Now, you know me, I am determinedly glass half full and I love many things about our city centre. Yet there are times when things need calling out and, yet again, the situation with John Lewis is top of that list. I am sure there is work going on with the council behind the scenes but how many business deals go on for – literally – more than a decade? I also understand that trading is incredibly difficult right now and John Lewis has more reasons to play its cards close to its chest than every other previous time our reporters have asked for updates. But it is a long time since we have had a definitive pledge to stay in Sheffield and – for the sake of all ‘partners’ if not customers – news from both parties is desperately needed. Our council is seeking permission from itself to change the store’s lease next week. Apparently conversations are ongoing. Do I hear you scream with frustration, at what pace?
