There are bright times ahead and we will be led to them by our incredible independent businesses, if we give them the support they need.

I hope you love the story on today’s front page as much as I do. It shows us that there is light at the end of this tunnel, excuse the pun!

This is a family- owned restaurant which wants to make things better in the neighbourhood where it is thriving. That means not only employing locals but using local food, building an extension that locals are proud of and creating somewhere that locals can celebrate … once we’re allowed out of course.

The ambition of Sheffield’s independent businesses is not being stopped by this awful situation, even though the pressure it creates on them is almost crippling . I adore the train carriage idea for The Summerhouse and I would love to sip a cocktail on that rooftop terrace. Only somebody who understands their area and wants to help it blossom would add such imaginative twists. That is what this city is known for – we don’t like to follow others, we like to do things our own, incredible way. I am sure you will join me in hoping The Summerhouse – and all other independent restaurants, cafes and pubs in our city – keep looking ahead for all of us. We need their creativity and caring, just like they need our support. We might not be able to do a lot while in our homes, but just wait until we are out!

I don’t know about you but I can’t wait to do my bit for our city’s economy by chatting over coffee and cake with friends in one of Sheffield’s many lovely cafes. They always have a warmer welcome than the national chains; the food is tastier and prepared with love; and every pound we spent there goes further and makes a bigger impression in helping our neighbourhoods along.

It takes bravery to start a business from scratch and even more to expand it. There is a lot at risk for every owner. All independents will need serious backing and support from our council as we move forward. Nothing more and nothing less. That isn’t actually much to ask for, particularly when you think of the rewards for an entire city.
