From the editor: 'Making paths and plaits with figures and facts through fog'

It isn’t very often that we change the front page of The Star at the last minute. We try to plan ahead but there isn’t a lot of point in doing too much of that when the nature of our trade is breaking news.

However, we did make a late change to yesterday’s edition.

Our team has two news conferences every day to make these decisions. After the second one we were all quite cheered by the news that covid cases in Sheffield were starting to show signs of decreasing. That is particularly true in the neighbourhoods dominated by students and the decline was exactly as the health experts had predicted.

We debated the front page. We are very aware of our duty to remain positive whenever possible but also to always remind everyone of our individual responsibilities to keep safe and stop the spread of the virus. Overall though, things are moving in the right direction but certainly not fast enough and not enough to radically change tact.

Then we heard from the government that negotiations were well under way with leaders in our region to move South Yorkshire into tier three. Well, that put an end to all discussions of what should be on the front page. But it does leave many questions about the detail and the figures which we keep asking on your behalf. If you have specific things that you would like to know, do get in touch.

Thank you also to everyone who has sent messages of support and appreciation to our team of journalists in recent weeks. They work so hard to make sense of the nonsense and we do our very best to make sure you have all the latest information, as well as something to make you smile through dark times.

We will keep asking your questions and we can only demand answers because we know you are right there with us.

That means so much. Local journalism matters because we can give you a voice. That has never been more needed than right now. We're all in this together no matter what your political beliefs, how you feel about covid or what you think would be the best restrictions for this area.

The thing that put a smile on my face yesterday was when one of our reporters used the phrase 'it is like plaiting fog'. Go on, have a guess what they were referring to and let me know your funniest suggestions.
