Today is the day we do things differently. Sheffield is now under new restrictions as we all join forces to slow the spread of this awful virus.

That we have to do this all over again is depressing for everyone. We look ahead to colder days and darker nights with heavy hearts and we wonder how long it will go on.

But we know we will get through this and we will create a future that isn’t shaped by a pandemic. We don’t know when that will be and we hope it is sooner rather than later, but we know we will get there.

We are all going through a huge range of emotions. There has been a lot of anger and much upset but there can also be an upbeat focus on pulling together. I have been through all three of those in the few minutes it has taken me to write to this point. It is ok to be confused but we must be wary of those who spread lies, who don’t believe the thing that has killed more than 43,000 Brits exists and refuse to follow even simple rules like keeping their distance and wearing a mask.

I am really concerned for relatives and friends who more at risk but this time round it is the impact on their mental health that is really making me worried. We seem more annoyed than fearful of covid at this point, even though it is only our reactions that have changed rather than the virus.

Memories of those worst lockdown moments loom large but we must focus on the wonderful tales of kindness and community which carried us through.

The new restrictions are different this time and everyone is being urged to make the most of the great outdoors. We all know exercise raises the spirits even when you have to wrap up in your woollies to brave the cold.
