From the editor: ' Welcome to the weekend and celebrate every single day'

Monday is most people’s worst day of the week. It often starts weighing on your mind before you even tuck into Sunday dinner and gets worse when the alarm clock rings at the crack of dawn.

No matter how much you love your job, the adventures of the weekend are always preferable to even the best Mondays in the office. But it turns out that it is possible to make the start of the week far more enjoyable by doing your bit to support the local economy and heading out for a meal, drink or two. The prime minister is whole heartedly encouraging us to spend, spend, spend.

Far more persuasively, our local firms need our help to safeguard jobs, keep innovating and help the wheels of industry turn.

If eating out or catching up with a friend over a glass of Sheffield ale is what our country needs, then who are we to resist?

It is good that so many city independent restaurants say the new scheme is working well for them. We all want them to succeed and thrive. Go forth, eat and be merry!

However, let’s also keep in mind that there are thousands of Sheffielders who would like nothing more than to go out for a meal but their personal circumstances mean they don’t, won’t and shouldn’t. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Please remember that we are all different and we must all find approaches to this that keep us safe and make us feel comfortable … every single day of the week.

I’ll be working from our usual offices in The Balance in the city centre by the time you’re reading this and let me share one downside of moving slowly back to normal working practices.

At present we are only working in the office one day a week and from home the rest of the time. So we bid each other fond farewells last Monday, knowing we wouldn’t be back together at our desks for several days.

Now normally that feeling only comes on Fridays when we are heading into the weekend, but it was only Monday. So for our team Monday feels like the new weekend but most definitely isn’t and not in a good way. We’ll be back with Tuesday’s paper as usual tomorrow and I hope you enjoy it as much as we love being together creating it.
