Small kids think that parents have all the answers but there are times when it feels like that power has completely gone and all you can do is rely on others to step in.

That is why the relief when you walk through the doors of Sheffield Children’s Hospital A&E is so complete.

It hits you like a wave and washes over you because that is the moment when you know that if anybody can make it all better, they will.

From the smiling receptionist to the country’s leading experts in their field, they somehow manage to have a joke and a laugh with every young patient while getting their life-saving messages across to the grown-ups.

Doing that day after day, seeing what they see, must be an incredible challenge – and now they face a new problem.

Our Children’s Hospital is £2.5million short because their incredible teams of volunteers have been unable to fundraise during lockdown.

How ironic that at a time when we need their skills and care most, their finances are taking a bashing like never before.

The hospital’s charity team were in the midst of their biggest fundraising appeal ever when this pandemic struck.

That means, unless we all join forces to help, the facilities just won’t be as good as our children and grandchildren deserve.

This summer we were all hoping to be trek around town hunting for bears as part of a unique fundraiser that genuinely does attract the crowds.

I still love seeing the odd elephant here and there thanks to the Herd of Sheffield 2016.

What a celebration that was and what a great way to raise lots of money for a beloved place while pulling the city together.

Covid-19 stopped the Bears of Sheffield 2020 but I have no doubt it will be back bigger and better next year.

In the meantime, we must all do what we can to help our Children’s Hospital fill the very large black hole in its finances.

If every family who has ever used its services gave a few pounds, it would be transformational.

Being blessed with one of just four specialist hospitals for children in the country is something we must never take for granted.
