Coronavirus has forced Sheffield charity to find new ways of working

I first found my lump three weeks before I had it checked out. But like any bloke, I just ignored it and thought it was nothing.

Being diagnosed with testicular cancer and having treatment was one of the most difficult periods in my life, but I’m so grateful for the care I received at Weston Park.

Fast forward 13 years and I now work for Weston Park Cancer Charity as its business development manager.

I don’t think people realise how lucky we all are to have Weston Park on our doorstep, so it’s a privilege to work in partnership with businesses across the region to grow and develop our services.

Yet, like m any charities who are dependent on fundraising; we are now preparing for a 40 per cent reduction in our income and our plans to expand are now under review.

But there is some good news; Covid-19 has forced us to find new ways of working and we are continuing to offer vital support, despite our centre being closed.

In some ways, this has made our services more accessible to people who struggle to attend the centre during work hours.

We’re now offering tailored cancer support sessions to businesses and their employees.

Whether that’s one-to-one telephone support or zoom consultations with our healthcare professionals, we are still here during covid-19 to support people affected by cancer.

Today, one in two of us will develop cancer. It will affect everyone one of us, directly or indirectly at some point.

So if you’re a business it’s likely that a high proportion of your employees will be affected by cancer.

We can help you provide the best support to an employee diagnosed with cancer or a colleague who is caring for a loved one with the illness.

Everyone thinks it won’t ever happen to them.

But when it does, Weston Park Cancer Charity is here – together at every step.

If you’re interested in our cancer support services or are concerned about signs and symptoms you can call our helpline on 0114 553 3330.

You don’t even need to be a Weston Park patient to speak to our healthcare professionals. They are ready to help you, and all you have to do is call.
