Celebrate our freedom of expression by condemning Iran death sentences

Your welcome article about the two Kurdish journalists sentenced to death (Desperate bid to save brother on death row, Aug 8) is a stark reminder of how Iran views dissenting voices and the extreme penalties faced by extraordinarily brave people like Hiwa Butimar and Adnan Hassanpour.

We who have freedom of expression can follow the campaign website for ways to appeal to the Iranian authorities to commute the death sentences.

We can also lobby our MPs to encourage the Foreign Office and the Prime Minister to take diplomatic action like the EU.

We are pleased that The Star is standing with local Sheffield refugee Martin Hadi. The Kurdish community in our City of Sanctuary and many concerned individuals, churches and groups oppose the outrageous death sentence in Iran of two Kurdish journalists.

Readers should visit our campaign website www.adnanhiwa.blogspot.com and get emailing/writing to the their MPs, MEPs and those in authority (both here and in Iran).

Let's show solidarity with those in our community who have fled oppression and still suffer the pain of seeing loved ones and fellow countrymen tortured, imprisoned and murdered by brutal regimes.
