The art of creating a welcoming Sheffield city centre
Sheffield BID highlights why public art creates a welcoming city centre
When people think about street art, they often picture colourful murals brightening ordinary walls. While they certainly do that, their impact goes far beyond aesthetics.

Across Sheffield city centre, public art is quietly shaping how people experience the place. It creates landmarks, celebrates local creativity and helps build an atmosphere that feels distinctive and alive.

First impressions matter. Whether someone arrives for work, study, shopping or leisure, the environment they encounter influences how they feel about the city.
A well-placed mural can turn an overlooked corner into a point of interest and encourage people to linger or take a different route.
Over the past year, Sheffield BID has worked with local artists to bring new street art into the city centre. But we are far from alone.
Across Sheffield, groups such as The Friends of Sheffield City Centre, local businesses, Lick of Paint CIC, individual artists and philanthropists are also helping to bring colour, creativity and character to our streets.
Together, these independent efforts reflect a shared pride in Sheffield and a collective desire to make the city centre better.

Diane Jarvis, CEO of Sheffield BID, said: “What makes street art particularly powerful is its accessibility. Unlike galleries or museums, public art belongs to everyone.
“You don’t need a ticket or a planned visit to enjoy it. Whether you’re walking to work, meeting friends or simply passing through, these artworks become part of everyday life.
“Street art also helps tell Sheffield’s story. Our city has always been shaped by creativity, innovation and independent thinking. Murals offer a way to celebrate those qualities while reflecting the people, communities and culture that make Sheffield what it is today.”
A striking mural can draw people along a different route, help them discover independent businesses and encourage them to stay longer.

For Sheffield BID, investing in street art forms part of a wider effort to create a city centre that feels cared for and full of identity, alongside improvements to cleanliness, safety, greening and events.
Murals alone will not solve the challenges facing city centres. Creating a successful city centre is usually the result of many smaller improvements rather than a single transformative project.
Better public spaces, lively streets, planting, independent businesses and public art all play their part.
As Sheffield continues to evolve, street art is helping create a city centre that feels distinctive, lively and genuinely welcoming.
More than simply brightening walls, these artworks tell our story, showcase local talent and leave a lasting impression.
That is why street art should be seen not only as a creative expression, but as an investment in the experience of Sheffield itself.
