OPINION: Why Owls fans should back Mr Chansiri's new crest

Everybody panic! Sheffield Wednesday have announced a new club crest!

Well, that seemed to be the initial reaction this afternoon on social media, as the Hillsborough club unveiled a brand new (well, old) badge to be used on match shirts from next season - read up on the change HERE

The new crest, featuring a white owl perched on a branch in a shield design, is not actually new at all, of course.

It was designed in the 1950s but although it was officially used, it never made its way onto first team kits at the time.

All that will change next season after Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri personally chose the old crest to be adorned on shirts for the 2016-17 season.

I’ve always been a big fan of the club’s current badge. It’s a simple, clean, bold design with minimal fuss; bright and striking when it whooshes up on screen on Sky Sports match days, for example.

The new badge has drawn a mostly positive reaction from fans so far, although not entirely. Some have compared it to a ‘Harry Potter crest’ or a ‘children’s crayon drawing’.

What could be better, they argue, than dipping into the club’s rich history to help celebrate its 150th anniversary next year? And maybe they’re right.

What’s more, Dejphon Chansiri has undoubtedly earned the right to choose whatever badge he sees fit as he mounts what is becoming an increasingly serious push for the club to return to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years.

Unlike the situation at Hull City - with the Tigers debacle - and Cardiff City’s change of shirt colour, Mr Chansiri is choosing to utilise the club’s past in a meaningful way in the future, rather than departing from it.

Even if you don’t like the logo, if you take a quick look at Sheffield Wednesday’s 6th position in the league table and a team that now boasts the likes of Fernando Forestieri, Gary Hooper and Bary Bannan, to name just a few, it’s probably hard to complain.

Dejphon Chansiri has turned the club around, from a near penniless mid-table outfit (at best) to a genuine promotion challenger with an upgraded pitch and scoreboard. If he likes that crest, he’s probably earned the right to choose it.

The most important thing is surely that Wednesday fans acknowledge the fantastic support the man has already given the club, and can only hope that it continues as that Premier League dream inches ever closer...
