OPINION: Team Sheffield won over HS2 - next stop, New Retail Quarter

'˜Make your ruddy mind up'.

That was the call to action hurled at Sheffield city region from nearby East Midlands about our city’s apparent dithering over HS2.

Well, they ruddy well have. HS2 will hurtle into Sheffield city centre, not Meadowhall, after all.

More than anything, it is heartening to see all of Sheffield’s key players working together and pulling in one direction at last.

HS2’s chairman has praised Team Sheffield’s ‘strength and unity’ which led to the station switch. It’s proof of what can be achieved when everyone is working as one and fighting for a common goal.

The Star picked up the campaign when it had pretty much hit the buffers last year – and in the following months drummed up the support of more than 200 key businessmen and women across the city who all agreed: City centre or bust for HS2.

It should give us heart as we approach several more key projects that have similar potential to boost Sheffield: the New Retail Quarter, the Chinatown development and Meadowhall’s new leisure offering.

If the same strength and unity can be applied to these projects, there is no doubt Sheffield can have a very bright and connected future.
