The New Year honours list often receives criticism because of seemingly pandering to celebrity culture.

But when people like former Sheffield teacher Jillian Margot Moore are recognised for their careers then they have to be given due praise.

Jillian used to work at Mansel Primary School in Parson Cross, later become a school governor and was chairman of governors at Grenoside Primary School for 40 years.

Since then, she has worked to help others support bereaved children and to improve Foxhill as director of Foxhill Forum.

Jillian’s MBE is well deserved as are all those awarded to people from across our region who have made a difference in their profession or community.

When people set out on an endeavour the last thing they expect is to one day receive a letter on behalf of the Queen.

Working hard and gaining a sense of satisfaction from a job well done is normally sufficient reward.

It is good, therefore, that there is a system in place to reward people who go the extra mile.

Of course some deserving individuals may miss out but today is about celebrating those who have been honoured.

The New Year list has some truly deserving names on it.
