When Nellie and Jack Strutt made their vows as the second world war raged, they certainly meant them.
For better or worse, in sickness and in health, through good times and bad they’ve stuck together – for an amazing 74 years and are still going strong.
There’s no big secret to their long and happy marriage the Chapletwon couple reckon.
But their recipe of give and take, keeping active and sharing the purse strings is one that so many people can’t stick to these days.
They are of the generation where you just got on with things.
When things were tough – during the war, bringing up young children, facing separation due to work away from home – Nellie and Jack’s generation didn’t throw in the towel. they‘d made a promise and they stuck with it.
The couple’s love and devotion, their joy in each other’s company and their appreciation of the little things in life as they both approach 100 years old is very heartwarming.
Sheffield’s longest married couple sound like they could teach us all a thing or two about getting along and making the most of life too.
Our best wishes go out to them.
