OPINION: Cooplands news is a blow

Cooplands bakers has been a fixture on South Yorkshire high streets for more than 80 years.

So it is disappointing to report that Cooplands’ head office and production site in Wharf Road, Doncaster as well as 39 stores will close.

It means the loss of more than 300 jobs from a business which employs a total of 562 workers.

A job is a job but when it is a local firm that is in difficulties it often carries more emotional value to people with no connection to the company.

Cooplands has long been a favourite for shoppers who needed a bite to eat in the town centres.

The one in Sheffield city centre on Commercial Street is also legendary amongst swimmers and divers from across the country who have been competing at Ponds Forge.

The one bit of positive news to come out of the announcement is that business restructuring specialist Resolve has bought 41 branches from Deloitte and Cooplands’ Bap Van delivery business.

Hopefully these remaining branches will be able to forge a business model that is robust and keeps the name going for decades to come.

For those affected by the job losses we hope payments or wages owed are made quickly.
