Don’t fear competition
So what’s next after Next? Firstly, the creation of around 120 much-needed jobs at the new development near Meadowhall. Secondly, 90 people hired to build the store and thirdly, possibly more “distinctive” retailers to help make our city more of an attractive offering. And we hope one of those distinctive retailers on the list to come will be Ikea The council was wrong to oppose the store. It is also wrong to oppose Ikea’s proposed development. The fragility of the city shopping centre is not Meadowhall’s fault – it is the result of a failure to secure investment in the centre – such as Sevenstone. A thriving Meadowhall does not preclude a thriving city centre, as Manchester demonstrates. We have seen the confidence in our centre from the development of The Moor. What we need is healthy competition in the city, which will attract shoppers and therefore more retailers. It appears only the council disagrees.
Reasons to visit region
Congratulations to those achitectural gems and visitor hotspots from our region in the running for tourism awards. South Yorkshire has come up trumps in the White Rose Awards and it’s good to see our favourites being recognised by Welcome To Yorkshire. We know Kelham Island Museum, the Showroom Workstation and Sheffield City Hall have so much to offer. So do Rotherham’s Magna Science and Adventure Centre. Now let’s hope they scoop the Yorkshire awards and go on to further success in the national tourism honours.
Here comes the summer
Get out your sun cream, it looks like we’re in for a sizzling weekend. After a disappointing June where even the hottest temperatures were the worst since 1997, tomorrow could see temperatures hit 23C. Fantastic, now let’s get out and enjoy it.
