Speculation online suggested that the Plug nightclub on Matilda Street close to the city centre had been sold and was due to shut down so the site could be re-opened as a golfing supplies shop.

In addition, the popular nightclub responded to one Twitter user who asked if they were closing down with the message: "We're very much in operation and announcing new shows."

Furthermore, a statement from the MJR Group, which operates The Plug and several other venues across the country, was issued to Forge Today - the University of Sheffield's Students Union news outlet - and also denied the closure rumours.

The statement said: "The reports are not true and we’ve been in touch with the respective publications for them to amend their articles.

“The Plug has not been sold and is operating as normal.

"Concerts, club nights and other events have been booked in for later this year.”
