Open day at city barracks

SHEFFIELD’S University Officer Training Corps is celebrating its centenary tomorrow with an open day.

Its base at Somme Barracks, on West Street, will be open to the public between midday and 5pm.

The event will include a display of military memorabilia – including guns, vehicles, and uniforms – demonstrated by armed forces veterans and enthusiasts from Sheffield’s Combined Operations unit, plus information about the officer training corps.

Regimental Sergeant Major Paul Wiggins said: “We are opening the doors to the public, allowing them to come in and see what we do.

“As many of our Officer Cadets as possible will be there to answer questions and speak to members of the public.

“We will also be raising money for the Army Benevolent Fund.”
