Old people’s homes to go

A SHELTERED housing scheme which is less than half-occupied is to be closed and demolished.

Barnsley Council has decided to shut the Sandhill Court sheltered housing complex - which has only 14 of its 29 homes occupied.

A meeting of the ruling cabinet heard how questions about the site’s long-term viability were first raised in 2004 due to low popularity - but because of a lack of alternative housing in the area, the complex was retained.

Cabinet members noted there are now only five residents left within the scheme who will require re-housing following the decision to close the scheme, the other nine having sought alternative accommodation elesewhere.

Following the demolition, the land will be used for a housing development.
