The bar in Devonshire Street was the overall winner in the Best Bar None awards, which are part of a national scheme recognising responsible licensing practice.

General manager Katy Street said: ““We’re overjoyed to have walked away with both the best bar award as well as the best overall winner award. We care a great deal about our customers and their safety and are proud to be part of Sheffield’s Best Bar None scheme.

“Our thanks go to everyone involved in making it a success. We’ll see you at the bar!”

Forty nightclubs, bars and pubs in the city centre and along Ecclesall Road are signed up to the city’s Best Bar None scheme, which is in its seventh year and is run by the city council’s drug and alcohol co-ordination team.

Earlier this year Sheffield won two national awards for its bar safety scheme, which has since been shortlisted for a night time economy award by the Association of Town and City Management.

Cabinet member of public health and equality Coun Mazher Iqbal said: “Congratulations to The Old House for winning this year’s Best Bar None. They’re a great example of what our bars, pubs and clubs are doing to look after their customers and keep our night time economy thriving.”

Guests at the awards ceremony helped raise £457 for Sheffield Street Pastors. Tricia Watts from the street pastors said: “Sheffield’s a great place to go out and we want to help people enjoy themselves. We here’s to care, listen and help anyone on a night out, especially vulnerable people. It’s wonderful to get support from the council, the police and the venues that we work with.”
