Offenders run lunch clubs

A SCHEME which gets South Yorkshire criminals cooking meals in lunch clubs across the county has won a national award for helping to stop re-offending.

The initiative, run by South Yorkshire Probation, is one of 10 in the country to receive recognition in the Community Programmes Awards to highlight schemes that reduce the seriousness and frequency of re-offending.

The Unpaid Work Lunch Clubs cater for elderly people across Sheffield and involve offenders planning meals, cooking, and clearing up afterwards.

Some offenders gain catering qualifications and use the work experience to find work at the end of their sentences. Seven lunch clubs run each week, catering for around 300 people.
