OAPs targeted in spate of muggings

PENSIONERS have been left traumatised after falling victim to a mugger who has struck three times in just over 48 hours on Doncaster housing estates.

One of the three victims was riding her disabled buggy when she was targeted by the robber - who has committed offences in Intake, Bessacarr and Cantley during broad daylight.

Police are searching for a Fiat Punto the crook is making his getaway in and have warned old people to be more security conscious when they are out and about.

The first incident was at the junction of Montrose Avenue with Shaftesbury Avenue, Intake, about 9.40am last Friday when a 73-year-old woman travelling in a invalid buggy near to Intake Library was approached from behind by a man.

He snatched her purse from a bag and ran from the scene before getting into the passenger door of a Fiat Punto, believed to be a blue-green colour.

During the second incident, on Stoops Lane, Bessacarr, about 2.45 pm on Sunday, a 76-year-old victim was walking along Stoops Lane when a man approached and grabbed her bag from her shoulder.

The offender got into a car, which left the scene travelling towards Bawtry Road.

Shortly afterwards police were called to Goodison Boulevard, Cantley, where a woman of 81 also had her bag pulled from her grasp.

Det Sgt Mark Oughton, of Doncaster CID, said: “Obviously the offenders have targeted vulnerable old ladies. These are despicable crimes and we would appeal to the public to come forward with information.

The offender is described as a tall thin white male with short mousy brown hair and a long pale face.

Anyone with information should contact DS Oughton or PC David Law on 01302 385319 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
