OAP hit while crossing road

A PENSIONER suffered a head injury and a broken leg after being hit by a car while crossing a road in South Yorkshire.

The 72-year-old man was hurt on Sheffield Road, at Birdwell, Barnsley, when a silver Mercedes crashed into him as he crossed to the Shell petrol station.

The vehicle was travelling towards junction 36 of the M1, and the driver – a 46-year-old man from Dodworth - was arrested for failing to stop and being unfit through drink or drugs.

After the crash at just before 10.55am yesterday, the victim was taken to the Northern General for treatment.
