Now Eagles fans can be proud of us says Aston

After victory over second placed London Broncos, and then narrowly missing out on a stunning result against table-toppers Leigh Centurions, the Eagles supremo is confident that his troops are finally showing the capabilities that he sees week in, week out on the training ground.

The improved form couldn’t have come quick enough. The Eagles were staring down the barrel of a drop into the dreaded bottom two, but the form shown over the last month has given the club the confidence to pull away from the relegation trap door.

“In the last two weeks, against London and now Leigh, we have shown we are good enough,” Aston told The Star of the recent form.

“It shows what we are capable of but we seem to knock off at certain times and it does cost us. There were massive positives to take out of the game against Leigh but we still have areas to work on.”

Together with the home victory over Featherstone Rovers, Aston says the Eagles faifthful can now have some pride in their team after a season which has seen more negatives than positives.

Now the newly-found momentum must be harnessed for another game against struggling Whitehaven – the type of side that the Eagles have come unstuck against throughout this season’s Kingstone Press Championship.

Now the full-time work that Aston has drilled into his squad from pre-season looks to be paying off, and that could give the Eagles the upper hand as the division breaks off following the final day of the regular season this weekend.

“The fans can be immensely proud of the team recently,” Aston added.

“It is a bit gut-wrenching for us to lose in the last minute but we need to galvanise ourselves now and be prepared both mentally and physically for the rest of the season.

“It takes time to get the group together. They are clicking and it is a little later than I would have liked. We have beaten London, we have beaten Bradford, Halifax and Featherstone and come close twice to have beaten Leigh, but you’ve got to be consistent in the other games.”

The Eagles make the long journey north to Cumbria this Saturday to face second bottom Whitehaven, kick off at The Recreation Ground is 6.30pm.
