I’ve just read your article on George Cunningham and the picture captioned “The Cunningham family relaxing at home” wasn’t quite right. As you could plainly see they are all peeling and pickling onions, which George’s father sold to shops nearby.
George would have to peel onions after he came home from school, in fact Cunnighams Pickled Onions and Piccalilli were very famous in Sheffield.
They eventually had a small factory on Queens Road and you could smell the odour of vinegar long before you saw the factory and even though the firm was sold. These products are still being bought today.
