Head chef Daniel Carreras is to star on a new TV series - focusing on nostalgic cooking - with the Hairy Bikers.

The top cook at The Milestone in Kelham Island was filmed for the as yet untitled programme, which is to be screened on BBC Two in January, while in the kitchen at both work and home.

Australian-born Daniel whipped up pigs head terrine, breaded and deep fried, as well as bavette steak with mushroom puree and shallot butter, at the gastropub, which shot to fame on Gordon Ramsay’s Best British Restaurant.

At home, he was able to keep it slightly more simple - for a chef - with barbecued lamb flatbread.

“The point was to show the contrast between what a chef might cook in a restaurant and at home.

“It carried on the nostalgia theme as well for me, because at home in Australia we used to cook lamb and have barbecues all the time.

“They wanted to see some of the dishes we make in the restaurant which are nostalgic, where we use traditional cooking, and also we have modern techniques which bring it into the 21st century.”

One of the most popular permanent dishes at The Milestone of course is the nostalgic sticky toffee pudding - it’s so in demand that there were complaints when it was taken off the menu.

And on the subject of desserts...

For most people their annual festive challenge is finishing the Christmas pudding. But 91-time world-record-holder John Evans is taking it a step further, by attempting to balance more puddings on his head than anyone before him at the first Bakewell Winter Wonderlandon November 18.

He is aiming for 100kg at the festive family wonderland, also on December 9-11.

John said: “I’ve been breaking world records for over 23 years now but I’m really excited about this one.”

It goes without saying there will be plenty of festive food at the spectacular, from German swing grills to churros and wood-fired pizza.

Plus there will also be mulled wine, champagne, prosecco and gin bars - including one in a converted bus. An ice rink, grotto, reindeer, fireworks, craft stalls and funfair are also on offer.

Shaun Hogg, event organiser, said: “Nobody has attempted a Christmas event on this scale here before and we’ve still got more attractions to announce.”
