Non-League Football: Stocksbridge pair show some fight in wrong way after scrapping with each other!

Stocksbridge Park Steels' 2-0 home defeat against Kidsgrove Athletic will be long remembered for the extraordinary scenes that saw two Steels players sent off for fighting with each other.

Steels were already trailing 1-0 to Aaron Johns’ goal, and there seemed nothing out of the ordinary when Stocksbridge were awarded a free-kick close to the half way line in the 70th minute.

But as Corey Gregory and Ashley Burbeary stood over the ball, the two suddenly started exchanging blows and had to be separated by teammates before both were sent off.

Steels could well have had the points wrapped up inside the opening 45 minutes.

Brodie Litchfield somehow failed to connect with a low cross inside five minutes, then Burbeary saw his volley at the far post blocked

Stocksbridge’s response to going to down to nine-men was superb as they looked the more likely scorers.

Jack Poulton saw his shot on the angles diverted over the crossbar, then Harrison Biggins was crowded out after a mazy run into the area.

In time added on Steels should have had a penalty for handball, which wasn’t given, and to rub salt in the wound Kidsgrove broke straight up the other end and with David Reay having gone forward for the corner, Harry Clayton was left with a simple chance to roll the ball into an empty net as Steels’ protests continued.

It was also a bad day for Sheffield FC who slipped to a 3-0 defeat at second-placed Spalding United and finished with ten men.

Leon Mettam, Brad Wells and former Sheffield player Connor Higginson netted, and Club then had Ross Goodwin sent off for a rash challenge late on.

Division One South leaders Shaw Lane AFC extended their unbeaten home record to 14 games with a 5-3 victory over Gresley FC, which keeps the Ducks three points clear at the top.

Frickley Athletic had to settle for a point from a 3-3 draw at relegation rivals Marine after Tyler Willaims, Ross Barrows and Joe Pugh had twice given the Blues 2-0 and 3-1 leads.

Matlock Town twice came from behind to draw 2-2 at home against Mickleover Sports.
